The 1942 Games (NES)
What Is 1942?
"1942" is an elegantly simple vertical shooter arcade game, spawned by Capcom into the arcade world in 1984. Created by Yoshiki Okamoto, this title is the first of the 194X series and denotes the setting of the Pacific Theater during the years of World War II. Being Japanese developed, it ironically lends itself to Western tastes, since the game has the player proceeding to Tokyo to wipe out the Japanese air fleet. The game was immensely successful, standing as the fifth largest earning table arcade game in Japan for 1986, and being among the five best-selling arcade conversion kits in the U.S. the same year. It was later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System and sold more than one million copies worldwide.
Game Controls
The player controls a plane named the Super Ace, a P-38 Lightning-style fighter aircraft. The player will shoot down enemy airplanes and dodge incoming fire while progressing through the vertically scrolling levels and collecting power-ups. One of the most famous power-ups grants the fighter two small planes on each side in the Tip Tow formation, which increases the firepower as well as protection of the fighter. If an airplane hits another one or gets hit by an enemy plane, a life is lost. Skillful maneuvering and fast reactions are their only chances.
Tips and Tricks
- Master the Tip Tow Formation: The Tip Tow power-up will significantly boost your firepower and defense, so try to hold on to it through tough enemy waves.
- Power-Up Wisely: Always power up health and weapons first. Some power-ups may instead increase fuel or lives.
- Learn Enemy Patterns: Every airplane has a distinct attack pattern, from the Kawasaki Ki-61s to the crashing boss Nakajima G10N; Learn them to nullify damage.
- Dodge Practice: The game is fast and unforgiving. Practice dodging bullets and enemy planes to save your life and ammunition.
