Grot is an underdog kind of retro first-person shooter that pays classic respects to early Doom-style action. Created for Lospec Jam 2 with all emphasis on nostalgia and fun, Grot puts players almost literally in the dark, massive environments full with creatures that serve an evil empire. Armed with a crossbow, one must traverse gritty and gloomy settings for bombastic levels of action to wash away the thrills of vintage gaming. Game of attrition dismantles the empire's ranks, reveals hidden secrets, and puts an end to the evil plans.

How to Play

Grot uses the 8-button controller set-up; it carries no mouse control, staying with its retro design. Here's how to go about it:

The D-pad moves around buttons to shoot your crossbow.
Look around with the left stick and the right one.
Use buttons to interact with the environment.

Grot was created in Lospec Jam 2, a game development competition that encourages creativity within strict limitations. The developers-Kusy (Bluesky), LittleMayBee, Hex (Twitter), and MartaK-focused on fun to develop the concept of under strict guidelines, such as utilizing an 8-button controller, set under 256×224 resolution, and respecting a 16-color palette, resulting in an incredibly nostalgic and thrilling retro shooter reminiscing of early games.
